August 2014

Skagen was probably the most important part of our cycling trip in Denmark. Well, probably “important” is not the right word, but rather a culmination point – when the trip comes to an end and everything, which will follow after, will be a just a journey to the starting point.

So finally, the most important day arrived. Visiting Skagen and the point where the two seas meet: the Baltic Sea and the North Sea.

Skagen is a little cute town with typical Danish architecture and a harbour spirit with boats of all possible sizes, it is also known by a big number of painters who used to portrait this beautiful area of Jutland. So if you are an art amateur, definitely visit the Skagens Museum of art. We only had enough time to get this beautiful postcard. :)

From Skagen to Grenen, the actual place of the seas rendez-vous point, there are only 3 awesome kilometers. Awesome for walking or cycling that is, with its incredibly beautiful nature and sea spirit. The old lighthouses along the road or rather their reconstruction are another point of interest of Skagen.

Colliding of two seas is an extraordinary phenomenon. Dark waves of the Baltic Sea crash against the vivid blue ones of the North Sea and then both disappear in the loud splash. But after a second this hypnotising miracle it happens again.

The Grenen beach itself is pure aesthetic pleasure – the gorgeous lighthouses, hills overgrown with long grass, the birds flying above in an extraordinary quantity – the birdwatchers will definitely love it here. Old German bunkers that remained since the Second World War somehow don’t spoil the landscape at all.

Of course, there were many tourists, so like with Little Mermaid in Copenhagen, we had to queue to take a picture of the two seas meeting point. This beauty was so striking that we completely lost the feeling of time. We regained consciousness just on time to realise that we were being late for our train to Frederikshavn.

I won’t exaggerate by saying that Skagen is the first memory, which comes to our minds when we think about Denmark. Make sure you don’t miss it!
