We are Moving!

We are ready for a new life period. Several days ago Xavier got a new working contract and this time Independent People are moving to (drum-roll)… England! We’ve visited the half of Europe, however England remains the country where we’ve been for only several hours. This year we had a stopover before heading to Iceland, which was enough only to enjoy “MIND THE GAP”. :)

Where will it be?

This part is my favorite one. It always feels like a lottery – you are waiting impatiently when the ball with the number falls and tells you your own destiny. Our ball announced Middlesbrough.

Now it means nothing, but soon we will know every tiniest shop, every street and every supermarket of this town. Can’t wait.

For how long?

6 months the first contract and then we’ll see. We don’t like the idea of staying less than 2 years.

What are our expectations?

Our travelling experience taught us one important thing: not to have any expectations. We chase away all the images of gentlemen, five o’clock tea and what-not. There are not many locals carrying the volume of “Pride & Prejudice”, right? (I LOVE MR. DARCY!) What is so cool in the expat’s life is to watch the transformation of the vague ideas about a certain country into love and very warm attachment. How many Motherlands can one have? No idea, but we have already three of them. England will certainly become the fourth one.

Our plans

to visit all existing Harry Potter places
to make at least hundred cycling weekends
to hear at least thousands jokes about the Hundred Years’ war
to spend an amazing week in London
to read all English literature that we’ve failed to read so far
to approach (we don’t dare to dream about more) to this orgasmic British accent
to make a sacrifice at the Brontë Parsonage Museum (we’ll live so close to this temple!)
to enjoy fully the great Rayanair flight net.
to visit Hadrian’s wall. Someone here is crazy about the remainings of Roman Empire…
to cross Scottish low- and highlands on the next tandem trip

I hope, nothing is forgotten.

All that remains to do is…

to fix our minivan Robby, who didn’t appreciate his solitude that lasted 6 months
to put the boxes with our belongings inside Robby
to prepare the stock of French cheese to carry on.
to realize that soon we’ll have to get used to the driving on the left. This point makes us really worried.

One more thing for sure is that being an Expat in England doesn’t represent anything special, there must be thousands of them! Maybe someone would like to have a cup of virtual tea and teach us some basics? :)

Welcome to England! We have been in London for over 2 years and love it. Let us know if you need any recs for a weekend visit. There is some much to see/do around the English countryside too, making it a great place to explore. Hope the transition is smooth!

  Thank you! So far we feel as if it was the first time on the Moon :D
  I think we’ll settle down in the small town Saltburn by the Sea which is so cute, and as soon as we find an appartment which is NOT in Victorian style, we’ll start the exploration of England. :)

Have fun in the UK! I was an expat there for 7 years before I moved to Canada.
Looks like you have a good plan in place for exploring :) Even in 7 years, I feel like I haven’t properly seen the UK :(

  UK seems to be one of those countries, that no matter how much time you spend exploring them, it’ll be still not enough. Just in our “non-touristy” area there are so many cute and hidden villages, that it’s impossible to decide with which one we should start lol.
  But 7 years sounds a lot, wow.

Nous déménageons !

Nous sommes prêts pour une nouvelle période de notre vie. Xavier a reçu un nouveau poste et cette fois Independent People déménagent en… (roulement de tambour) Angleterre ! Nous avons été dans la moitié de l’Europe, mais l’Angleterre reste un pays où nous avons mis le pied uniquement pour quelques heures, lors de notre escale pour nous rendre en Islande. Cela a suffi uniquement pour apprécier “MIND THE GAP”. :)

Où vivrons-nous ?

Cette partie est ma préférée. Une sensation comme s’il s’agissait de la loterie – nous n’avons qu’à attendre patiemment la boule qui doit sortir et annoncer notre destinée. Notre boule a déclaré Middlesbrough.

Pour l’instant ce nom ne dit rien, mais bientôt nous connaîtrons chaque plus petit magasin, chaque rue et chaque impasse de cette ville. Vivement !

Pour quelle période ?

Le premier contrat est pour 6 mois, mais nous n’aimons pas l’idée d’y rester moins de 2 ans. On verra.

Quelles sont nos attentes ?

Notre expérience nous a appris de n’avoir aucune attente. Nous chassons les images de gentlemen, five o’clock tea etc. Il n’y a pas beaucoup de locaux qui se baladent avec le tome de « Orgueil et Préjugés », n’est-ce pas ? (J’adore Mr. Darcy!) Ce qui est tellement magnifique dans la vie d’expat’ c’est d’observer la transformation d’idées vagues par rapport à un certain pays, à l’amour et l’attachement. Combien de patries peut-on avoir dans la vie ? Aucune idée, mais nous en avons déjà trois et l’Angleterre certainement deviendra la quatrième.

Nos plans

Visiter tous les endroits connectés à Harry Potter
Faire une centaine de week-ends à vélo
Entendre un millier de blagues sur la Guerre de Cent Ans
Passer une semaine inoubliable à Londres
Lire toute la littérature anglaise que nous avons ignorée jusqu’ici.
Approcher (sans rêver de plus !) cette délicieuse prononciation « british »
Faire un sacrifice dans le musée des sœurs Brontë (nous allons vivre très près de ce temple !)
Profiter à fond des connexions de Ryanair
Visiter le Mur d’Hadrian. Quelqu’un d’entre nous raffole de l’Empire Romaine !
Traverser les Low- et Highlands écossais lors de notre prochain voyage à tandem

J’espère, que rien n’est oublié.

Tout ce qui reste à faire :

Finir la réparation de notre camion Robby, qui n’a pas vraiment apprécié la solitude des 6 derniers mois
Mettre tous les cartons dans Robby
Préparer le stock des fromages français pour les 1 an qui viennent
Réaliser que bientôt il faudra s’habituer à la conduite à gauche. Ce point, d’ailleurs, nous donne beaucoup de mal.

Nous savons, que l’expatriation en Angleterre n’a rien de spécial, il y a des milliers d’expats. Peut-être quelqu’un voudrait nous apprendre les basiques autour d’une tasse de thé virtuel ? :)
